Band of Bugs Preview: Sound

Unfortunately I was not able to experience the full effect of the sound design in Band of Bugs as I was playing on a mono TV or a mono headset (blasted faulty headphone converters!) for most of the time.

Here’s what I can tell you: The character voices were fun in that Simlish way. (Where does NinjaBee come up with these fake mumble languages?) The music matched well with the style of the game and avoided becoming grating even after many hours of play.

As for sound effects: As I dug deeper into the game I got very used to the "Thwack" sound of hitting someone with a melee weapon but it never truly annoyed me. In fact, I felt a certain satisfaction in hearing that sound as I brought the smack down on some unsuspecting Warrior or Grunt. Maybe the satisfaction worked as counterpoint to the anger, confusion, and disappointment I felt when I heard the sad bubbling sound of a "Weak Hit". Damn those pitiful dice rolls! (Grr...that is another thing I forgot to mention in my Gameplay section...guess I will update the Addendum!)

Overall, I think the sound adds the appropriate dimensions to the game without ever overpowering or distracting from BoB's focus: combat, combat, and more combat. But I am warning you now, the NinjaBee's voice will cut through your soul like Hanzo steel.

On a sidenote... I own those headphones. Great sound (for $50) terrible design. The cord is laid out terribly with the sizing being off everywhere. To left ear too short, to right ear too long, to player to short, with extension too long.
That cracks me up...I used

That cracks me up...I used them because *I* own them too. And I couldn't agree more about the cord layout. Ugh. But the sound, yeah...it's awesome! And great on the NYC subway to help dampen all the subway noise (which has been proven to cause serious hearing damage over time just from everyday normal exposure).

The sad thing is that I can't find my Senheiser over the ear headphones which I would use at home instead of these...grr.

LOL. My main headphones

LOL. My main headphones are senheisers which I use on my PC / instruments. I have the HD-280s. We must have very similiar headphone tastes.

I go through headphones in < a year and my sennheisers are the only ones that have lasted longer than that. I have a tendency to step on cords =D

Another good headset (for the money) are these $10ish Koss jobbies

They work better than those Sonys in making you feel completely isolated from the world. Not as good of sound though, but I'ld say they would easily live up to a $50 headset from other developers.

If I ever *find* my

If I ever *find* my senheisers I will let you know what model they are. LOL.

And thanks for the Koss tip!

Oops.

Looks like maybe Wordpress hates me for trying to host that image from my blog...it's broken on my blog too...so I'm gonna pull it down from here for now. Maybe I'll throw it up later. Oops.
