Wishful Thinking: XBLA Portable

I love portable gaming. Since my DS started acting funky (turning on at random), I picked up a PSP and really love it. Loading times and battery life are both excellent (it's a slim), and I love some of the functionality Sony added recently. Being able to play PS1 games on the PSP got me thinking about what Microsoft's portable should be in a perfect world: an XBLAP (Xbox Live Arcade Portable).

I don't think it's even remotely possible to make something like that and have it be commercially viable... it would cost too much, and the target audience would be too small. Still, I'd love to be able to simply transfer my XBLA games to a portable system like a PSP (but with two analog sticks, and extra shoulder buttons - worth the extra bulk, IMO). Also, make sure it has wi-fi built in like the PSP and DS. That way we could sign into Live and update our friends lists and leaderboards from any hotspot. Also, let users browse and download XBLA games on the go, like the iPod Touch does with music. Oh, and remote play like the PSP has (to play PS3 games) would be excellent. And let it play all video formats, instead of just mp4s or whatever crap format iPods and PSPs use.

Hm. I guess that's it.

EDIT: I lied, there's more. I was just thinking about how small the characters from Undertow and N+ would be on a portable... :)

I wasn't able to gleam much info about Live Anywhere from that post, but seeing as it was from two years ago I guess it never really caught on? Unless I've just been living under a rock, which is quite possible. :)

Nope. nadda. NEVER.

Maybe a portable xbox, that would be cool, like the sega nomad.

I think by the end of the 360's life cycle, 1 should be made. It would destroy the psp. (not DS though)

yeah the Live anywhere stuff went absolutely nowhere even though the looked to be pretty far into it. Here is a bit more info:

As for MS Gaming platform, I'm guessing they just annouced it at GDC.

XNA on Zune! Add a market place for downloading titles and away you go. Before you laugh, I think that it'll end up being like on the 360 where everyone gets the "Express" version and big developers will have a more powerful one.

I had this same exact thought. A portable Xbox that would just play live arcade games would be an instant purchase for me. Maybe once they figure out a way to reduce the size of the components even more something like this would be possible. Although I wonder how games that are played with the vision camera would work on a portable.
