What do you want in XBLArcade?

So as you may have noticed, things have been pretty quiet around these parts as of late, and to put your minds at ease, yes we are still alive. :)

We are currently looking at how to best serve the community that has been so good to us over the last (almost) three years. Rather than doing this all on our own, we'd like to ask all of you what you'd like to see here.

Some of the ideas we've been batting around is improving the community side of the site including things like leaderboards, user reviews and the like. Another idea was to focus less on the short news posts that are posted everywhere, and focus more on longer, original content post (for those of you that remember, I'm talking about posts like the board game roundup we did a while ago). Yet another idea is to iclude the new and exciting world of XNA.

So, what do you folks prefer?

Personally I would love to

Personally I would love to see Leaderboards as well as User Reviews on this site. When it comes to my XBLArcade addiction, this is usually the first site I come to in order to see what's new in the world of XBLA. Dedicating a section to XNA is a good idea as well in my opinion. Although I have yet to purchase any of the XNA titles (due to the lack of achievements) I have interest in a few of them, so posting some reviews or something along those lines would be a great idea.

Also when I first started coming to this site everyone would post the achievements they had gotten that week on XBLArcade games. I miss that, and think we should start doing that again. Maybe an official XBLArcade Achievements of the week section or something like that would be a cool idea.

Original Post, much like the Board Game roundup are a great idea. Basically anything that gets the community invovled is a wonderful idea in my opinion. Still you have to keep the regular news post around because like I said before, I am one of those people that come here for my XBLA info first and if I find it some where else I always post it in the forums here if you haven't already done so.

Contest always help. They often bring in new people to your site and that is always a good thing. How about setting up a play date for certain games every week to get community to play together. One week we could bust out 3D Ultra Mini Golf and then the next week we could hook up with Castle Crashers or Undertow. Maybe post results of some of the games on here so members could have bragging rights for that week. Something along those lines would be cool.

I would love to see this community grow, it's sad to see that it's not as big as it was when I first joined. Why not start up a "Clan" or something like that. Whatever it takes, because I love this website and I will continue to visit here on a daily basis. Tomacco, Lunar and everyone invovled with the community here, keep up the great work and I hope 2009 turns out to be a great year for everyone.

Community involvement = good

I probably won't be a contributor, but I would enjoy some more features. Community leaderboards are fine - even if only a massive "members page" of sorted gamercards!

I think it make sense to somehow trim off the reproduction of content people see pretty much everywhere. Rereading the game announcement I just saw on MajorNelson's site isn't too informative. Having a "This week!" box in the corner with the name/logo of whatever game is (or has been) released would probably be good enough, and could even be text or link to the relevant marketplace "buy now" page.

I'd like to see more features. Perhaps a "zombie session" feature where someone goes into the hows and whys around a particular project that is listed in the graveyard.

That tree thing in the right must be a nightmare to maintain. Why not go alphabetical, with a special category for graveyard.

Fire off some emails around "dormant" games that we haven't heard about in a while (here's where your metatagging of articles should pay off - if there hasn't been a post mentioning something in a while, it might be good to dig into). Hit up the publisher, the developer, whomever to find out what's going on. Even one response in a hundred attempts might net you some news that will be exclusive (or at least unique) to you.

In line with that, perhaps allow registered users to 'flag' games as something they're anticipating (for sake of simplicity, just clear the flag post-release), or even just add them to a 'watch list' like one might commenters. That allows you to keep a 'most anticipated' list or something in your sidebar that would change without necessarily needed your real involvement.

Another potential feature (potential name - "Carded!") might be around those 'hard to get' or 'impossible' achievements in XBLA games - what achievements will really show an XBLA fan as hardcore? This could be a biweekly feature, alternating with what are the easiest achievements out there. These would be really simple features that could be templated really easily - name of achievement, value, game, tile image of the achievement (the dimmed grey version for hard ones, maybe, color for the easy ones) and a paragraph about it's ease or difficulty. Lends itself to user submissions as well, which makes the admin job easier since they just need to filter and post.

I don't really want to see
  • I don't really want to see news on Community games. I would mostly like to see XBLA news.
  • Perhaps you could allow community members to submit stories that you approve before they go on the site. (If successful enough, you could possibly get XBLA devs to post news about their game here as well, with games having their own special pages) This would mean a fresh ammount of news since someone would be bound to submit news. You count also require a user-submitted news story to have a certain amount of words.
  • @Tomacco You could also try setting up the XBLA Play page I emailed you about along time ago. (XBLA Play = organized community playdates over Live.)
  • Something else cool would be to get exculsive interviews with XBLA devs, and have some giveaways like you used to.
  • Perhaps you could write original articles about what makes XBLA so good, and what XBLA needs to improve to become better.
  • Community Rewards (User with most XBLA achivements, user with most titles, etc)
  • A long time ago, you merged with iLoveXBLA. Perhaps you could also merge with XBLA Insider.
  • Instead of community members sharing codes in the fourms, they can submit them to the XBLArcade writers to giveaway as a much more noticable contest. You can also attempt to redeem the codes without downloading the game, so community members won't get scammed as much.
I like the idea of community

I like the idea of community type features and articles. I very much would like to have input from regular xbla players on new games (maybe start a thread for each new game so we can comment on them or give our own reviews). Another thing is the fact that arcade definitely changed from its early years.... Gone are the classic games (arcade, console) that many of us enjoyed so much.

I'd really like to see

I'd really like to see community reviews. In fact, I'd love to write some myself. Also, I'm really interested to see what comes out of XNA, so any info about interesting games would be nice. As for leaderboards, I really stopped caring after you stopped doing them last year.

- Just have a picture with

- Just have a picture with the Arcade game the week with direct link to the xbox.com page and download link

- News / media on upcoming games and rumours

- Short reader reviews of released arcade games

- Short section on Community games - Short introductory paragraph about the games of current week

- Download recomendations for last week

don't forget twitter

You can also consider starting a twitter feed for the site.

use it for tinyurl links to articles (when posted) and for pointers to general XBLA news that may not really be site worthy (e.g. "Braid theme now up on Marketplace"). There's lots of game companies out there too - following their feeds might lead to an in later for contests/prizes or news/exclusives...

I always come here for XBLA

I always come here for XBLA news because its a niche that I really enjoy. I also agree with the XBLA Play thing, even though I don't have Gold. Multiplayer games are what will unite the community and make it much stronger.

I think you should show us

I think you should show us fan fiction pictures. I'd like to see one fanfic picture of each game of Wednesday. I personally do draw and I'm sure there are many other drawers too and I'd like to draw pictures of games.

So that there would be more news, upload fanfics and inform us when we can draw something and what to draw.
